Amazon &Google Sue Bigboostup to Combat Fake Review Manipulation
Release time:2024-10-30 16:17
On October 28, international media reported that Amazon and Google have jointly filed lawsuits against Bigboostup.com, a website allegedly selling fake reviews to bad actors for posting on Amazon stores, Google Search, and Google Maps.
The lawsuits accuse Bigboostup of facilitating false product and business reviews aimed at misleading consumers on both Amazon and Google platforms. Amazon emphasizes that consumers rely heavily on product reviews when making purchasing decisions and that deceptive reviews mislead them into believing such feedback is genuine and unbiased.
Since 2015, Amazon has actively pursued legal actions against fake review brokers and has recently partnered with the Better Business Bureau to step up enforcement efforts against these intermediaries. This lawsuit represents Amazon’s ongoing commitment to combating malicious actors and safeguarding consumer interests beyond its platform. Last year alone, Amazon successfully blocked over 250 million suspected fake reviews globally and pursued legal action against more than 150 fake review intermediaries.
Moreover, Amazon and Google are not alone in the fight against fake reviews. In June this year, the U.S. review platform Yelp won a case in court, with the judge ruling in favor of its right to pursue trademark infringement and unfair competition lawsuits against companies claiming they could remove negative reviews from Yelp’s platform.
Amazon and Google’s joint legal action against Bigboostup reflects a significant stance by major tech companies against fraudulent practices affecting consumer trust. By targeting platforms that facilitate fake reviews, Amazon continues to uphold its commitment to a transparent and trustworthy marketplace. This lawsuit also emphasizes the increasing responsibility of digital platforms in curbing misinformation and protecting consumers. As similar efforts grow across the industry, the message is clear: deceptive practices will face legal consequences, underscoring the importance of integrity in online commerce.
