On September 11, according to foreign media reports, Amazon's cloud computing division, AWS, announced that over the next five years, it will invest £8 billion (approximately $10.45 billion) in the United Kingdom to build, operate, and maintain new data centers. This significant AWS UK investment aims to expand its infrastructure and meet the rising demand for cloud services.

These new Amazon data centers in the UK will be distributed across London and the western regions to accommodate the growing need for cloud computing. However, the exact locations have not been disclosed for security reasons. AWS anticipates that by the end of 2028, this investment will contribute £14 billion to the UK's GDP and create over 14,000 jobs. The UK Treasury revealed that the government is also in discussions with AWS regarding investments in other regions.

This investment marks an acceleration of Amazon's expansion in the UK. Since 2022, AWS has invested £3 billion in facilities in London and Manchester. AWS Managing Director Tanuja Randery stated that when the team selects locations globally to establish data centers, they consider multiple factors such as electricity, water resources, and the environment. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is also a significant factor driving the cloud computing growth and increasing demand for cloud services.

In recent years, AWS has been vigorously expanding its business in Europe. Earlier this year, AWS announced that it would invest €15.7 billion in Spain and €7.8 billion in Germany. Analysts point out that as the AI boom drives the cloud computing growth, many large enterprise customers, after pausing investments last year, are once again increasing their funding in the cloud computing field. This substantial AWS UK investment reflects its confidence in the future cloud services market and its long-term commitment to the UK market.
