Dutch E-commerce Rankings: Amazon & AliExpress Lead, Fashion Dominates
Release time:2024-11-26 11:55
Recently, German e-commerce analytics platform ECDB published its latest rankings of online sellers in the Netherlands. Based on online sales data from 2023 to the present, international e-commerce giants such as the U.S.-based Amazon and China's AliExpress and Shein have demonstrated strong performance, carving out significant market shares in the growing Dutch e-commerce landscape.
Compared to the traditional Dutch e-commerce ranking Twinkle100, ECDB’s rankings emphasize transactional data analysis. According to ECDB, Amazon in the Netherlands has performed exceptionally well, ranking second only to domestic leader Bol. Meanwhile, AliExpress and Shein claimed the sixth and eighth spots, respectively, with emerging platform Temu landing at 37th. In contrast, the Twinkle100 rankings are dominated by Dutch companies, with foreign platforms ranked much lower. For example, in Twinkle100, AliExpress ranks 43rd, Shein 47th, and Temu 55th.
This ranking discrepancy stems from the methodologies of the two reports. Twinkle100 primarily relies on company-reported or estimated sales figures, while ECDB bases its rankings on direct data from over 1 billion monthly transactions via credit cards, digital wallets, and debit cards. Additionally, ECDB incorporates publicly available information, traffic analyses, and web scraping data to provide a more comprehensive market perspective. Consequently, ECDB’s rankings offer deeper insights into the actual impact of international e-commerce platforms on the Dutch market.
The ECDB rankings highlight the growing influence of international e-commerce platforms in the Netherlands. Among the top 10 ECDB-ranked platforms, only four are domestic companies, whereas the Twinkle100 rankings include seven Dutch companies in the top 10. This trend underscores how international e-commerce giants are rapidly gaining market share, particularly in cross-border e-commerce.
For instance, Amazon in the Netherlands has become a critical shopping destination for Dutch consumers due to its extensive global supply chain and diverse product offerings. Similarly, AliExpress and Shein have attracted a large base of fashion-conscious shoppers with their low prices and wide product variety. Emerging platform Temu has also made a notable entry, showcasing significant growth potential.
Although the rise of international e-commerce platforms poses competitive pressure on local businesses, the Dutch e-commerce market still offers substantial growth opportunities. ECDB data indicates that electronics account for the highest share of sales at 32%, while fashion is the most popular category, with 44% of e-commerce companies classified as fashion suppliers. Furthermore, while the beauty and personal care sector currently comprises only 7% of the market, industry experts see considerable growth potential in this segment.
