U.S. Mobile E-commerce Hits $280B, Leads 2024 Holiday Sales
Release time:2024-08-23 14:55
On August 21, according to foreign media reports, a new Adobe Analytics report revealed that U.S. mobile sales hit a record high of $280.4 billion from January to July 2024, representing a 10.2% increase over the same period last year.

Adobe Analytics’ comprehensive data is based on the analysis of over one trillion visits to U.S. retail websites, covering 100 million SKUs across 18 categories. In January, mobile accounted for 46.7% of total online sales, growing to 49.3% by July, with a seven-month average of 47.7%. Promotional events like Prime Day further accelerated this growth, pushing mobile sales past desktop shopping to account for 51% of sales.
The data shows a significant shift towards mobile shopping in categories like groceries and personal care. From January to July, online grocery sales via mobile reached $66.9 billion, up 15% year-over-year, with mobile accounting for 68.2% of July’s total grocery sales. Personal care, including cosmetics, saw mobile online sales of $22.6 billion during the same period, a 7.6% increase. For apparel, mobile devices also emerged as the primary transaction channel, accounting for 60.8% of July’s sales.
Vivek Pandya, Adobe’s lead analyst, pointed out that the growth of mobile e-commerce is driven by consumers’ demand for convenience and speed. However, it is expected that larger purchases will also start shifting to smaller smartphone screens. Currently, shopping baskets on mobile devices are 32% smaller than those on desktops, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for brands to enhance the mobile shopping experience and increase revenue.
Adobe forecasts that mobile shopping will drive 53% of total online sales during the holiday shopping season in November and December this year, up from 51.1% during the same period in 2023, continuing its trend of growing dominance in e-commerce. Looking ahead to 2025, mobile shopping is expected to consistently outperform desktop shopping even outside the holiday season, marking a significant shift in online consumer behavior.
Conclusion:
The impressive growth of U.S. mobile e-commerce in 2024 underscores the increasing shift towards mobile shopping, with record-breaking sales and a projected dominance during the holiday season. As mobile commerce continues to lead the way, businesses must adapt to this evolving landscape to stay competitive.
