According to recent reports from foreign media, nearly half of German consumers plan to begin their holiday shopping as early as the end of August, with 49% indicating that they intend to maintain or even increase their spending on Christmas gifts this year.

The findings come from the 2024 Christmas Shopping Report, based on a survey conducted by eBay Advertising among 10,000 German consumers. The report reveals that about half of the respondents (49%) plan to spend at least the same amount as last year, if not more, on Christmas gifts. In contrast, less than one-fifth (20%) of the respondents said they plan to reduce their Christmas shopping budget.

The report highlights that younger demographics and families with children are generally more flexible with their Christmas budgets. Specifically, 11% of young consumers aged 18-29 plan to spend more on gifts this year, while 52% of families with children intend to maintain or increase their spending compared to last year. Regionally, consumers in Bremen (7%), Hesse (4%), and Lower Saxony (4%) are among the most willing to spend more on Christmas gifts.

Additionally, data from eBay Germany indicates that some consumers began their Christmas shopping as early as the end of August. In the three months leading up to Cyber Week 2023, products such as razors (+15% in week 34), necklaces (+10% in week 34), and smart speakers (+25% in week 35) saw a significant increase in sales. Demand peaked in the three weeks before November's Cyber Week, with notable sales growth in electronics like televisions (+110% in week 41) and laptops (+100% in week 46).

Arnaud Valion Gueutal, Director of Advertising for eBay Central Europe, stated that this trend demonstrates uninterrupted demand for Christmas gifts in the German market, which is a positive sign for retailers. As they prepare for this year’s holiday season, retailers and brands who can differentiate their products early and expand their reach to potential buyers stand to achieve higher sales performance.

As the holiday shopping season approaches, it's clear that German consumers are poised to maintain or even increase their spending, with many starting their purchases earlier than ever. This presents a golden opportunity for retailers to capitalize on this trend.
